Did you know that Microsoft Office Home and Student has a secret that may come back to bite you?

What is it?    You may be using it illegally without even knowing it

I saw a question this morning regarding the Microsoft Office Home and Student edition. Someone wanted to know if it could be used by a small business customer of theirs.

In the licensing terms, you will find the following listed under INSTALLATION AND USE RIGHTS under section a. It says:

“Licensed Device. You may install one copy of the software on three licensed devices in your household for use by people who reside there. The software is not licensed for use in any commercial, non-profit, or revenue generating business activities.”

No tricky wording, no unreadable legalese, It is the edition for HOME and STUDENT use, NOT business use.

How we can help

We can supply all of the Microsoft Office product set. These are primarily Office 365 subscription, the personal home editions and the various business editions plus all the ‘retail’ editions.

Office 365 Subscriptions

As you are probably aware Microsoft, like most software companies, is moving to a ‘software as a service’ business model where software is licensed as a monthly or annual subscription.

The main business options are:

    Web Applications
    OneDrive
    NO Exchange / Email

  • Office 365 Business Premium Office Desktop Applications

Retail Editions:

We offer two retail editions of Microsoft that can be used for commercial, non-profit, and revenue-generating activities.

The premium edition is Microsoft Office 2016 Professional Plus, the most powerful edition of Microsoft Office. It contains everything you need: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access, and OneNote.

Slightly cheaper is Microsoft Office 2016 Standard which contains Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, and OneNote.

This means there are no monthly or annual payments. You only pay the once, and you are then able to use the software for as long as you like. This means, for example, if you get a new computer you can transfer the software to it and continue to use it on the new computer. Plus you can install the software on two computers (so long as you are the main user of both computers and as long as at least one of the computers is a laptop).
